Mature Jewel spider eating a meal

The spider was nearing its life at this point.  A week later and she/he was gone.  We’ll see its offspring next year growing from little babies to as big as half of my thumb!  They eat lots of flies and our balcony seems to be a good feeding ground.

One day, I saw a smaller Jewel spider in the middle of its web being harassed by a wasp.  I think the wasp was looking for a meal, but the spider stuck out its legs to make it seem bigger I think and defended itself very well.  The wasp wasn’t deterred though and kept coming back, very persistent!  Not sure who won this battle in the end.

It’s amazing how much life one can observe in such a small space!
